Open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon

The location of this library is in the middle of Fishersville, Virginia, at the intersection of U.S. Route 250 and State Route 608.  We are about a hundred miles west of downtown Richmond. Fishersville is half way between the county seat of Staunton and the City of Waynesboro.  The mailing address is P.O. Box 436 Fishersville, VA 22939.  You may visit our website http://www.acgsva.com for event information.  Our e-mail address is acgsva@gmail.com.

We are best described as a library within a library, since we occupy the second floor mezzanine within the main Augusta County Library, which has its own genealogical collections. The library is open and staffed on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  If these times do not suit you, you may e-mail us, and an effort will be made to accommodate your needs. There are no entrance fees for either library. We can accommodate no more than ten researchers at a time. The phone number for the Library is 540-885-1991, and it does have voice mail.

Be Prepared

You may use a camera or a hand scanner.  A copy machine is available at 15 cents per copy payable to the attendant of our library.  A microfilm reader is available but it cannot save copies to a USB drive.

Holdings

We have published quite a few books indexing records of marriages and deaths in the Augusta County Courthouse. A complete list with pricing and shipping information is on our website, http://www.acgsva.com/Publications.html. Also for sale is The Manor of Beverley Patent, a map of the original patent of about 118,000 acres granted in 1736 for a part of Augusta County.

Our holdings consist mainly of local family histories that have been collected since the society began, and books of general local history of Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. We also maintain a large cabinet of vertical Surname Files with info on many families that settled here, some as early as the late eighteenth century. This is something that our members and others contribute to on a continuing basis.

Augusta County Cemeteries

Visitors frequently come to Augusta County seeking help in finding cemeteries, and this is something we have uniquely addressed.  Our Cemetery Committee maintains an indexed file of all cemeteries that we have been able to find. Pictures of each and driving directions are given, and this information is contained in three-ring binders in our Library. We also have a complete set of USGS Topographical Maps of Augusta County, which are referenced to the cemetery lists.   Cemeteries are highlighted on the maps, and GPS coordinates are listed.  We know of no other genealogical library that provides this service so completely.
